Souness names the Premier League best central midfielder

Graeme Souness has hailed Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho as ‘the best central midfielder’ in England after the Brazilian starred in his side’s 2-1 win over Liverpool on Thursday night.

The 33-year-old is often overlooked in City’s star-studded side, but his importance to the side was emphasised recently with defeats to Crystal Palace and Leicester City in his absence.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder returned for the win at Southampton, before producing a stand-out display as City closed the gap on league leaders Liverpool by beating Jurgen Klopp’s side at The Etihad.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Souness was full of praise for Fernandinho, labelling him as the best in his position in the country.

He said: “Fernandinho is easily the best central midfield player in our country right now, and the amount of work he gets through is overlooked by the technique he has got as well.

“When he wins it, puts a tackle in and gets his head up, he generally makes the best pass that’s on offer.”
