Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are the two frontrunners to replace Michael Carrick as Manchester United manager.
United chiefs are considering change following the club’s worst start to a league season since 1986. Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford could be the final fixture of Carrick’s reign, a result which followed a 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League.
Carrick was appointed permanent manager in the summer after an impressive interim spell, but United have struggled to replicate last season’s performances.
Sky Sports are reporting that Nagelsmann and Howe are the leading contenders to take charge. The pair are both out of work after leaving Germany and Newcastle United in the summer respectively, and would not require compensation fees.
Howe stepped down as Newcastle manager after five years in July, a period which included two Champions League qualification and 2025 EFL Cup success.
Nagelsmann has long been highly-rated by Manchester United figures, despite a difficult time in charge of the German national team. United’s head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, previously worked with the 39-year-old at RB Leipzig. Both managers are attractive options given their availability and ability to start quickly.
