Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that he is hopeful that Manchester United can tie David de Gea down to a new contract, saying that he is the best goalkeeper in the world.
Reports this morning claimed that while the Manchester United number 1 is keen to stay at Old Trafford, he would like to see his wage reflect his status at the club, and wants parity with the clubs current top earner, Alexis Sanchez, who picks up a whopping £500,000-a-week.
De Gea moved to Old Trafford back in 2011 from Atletico Madrid, although he got off to a shaky start to life in the Premier League, where he made a number of high profile gaffes in his debut campaign.
Since then though, he has developed into a consistent performer for the Red Devils, winning four of the last five Player of the Year awards, more than anyone else in the clubs history.
Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s game against Southampton, caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said he is hopeful the club can extend his stay at the club.
”The club really showed how much they wanted him back in the day when Eric (Steele) and the gaffer found him,” Solskjaer told his pre-match press conference.
”There were probably better keepers there at that time. But the belief the manager showed in him, given the criticism he got, paid dividends.”
“Hopefully they will agree because David is the best goalkeeper in the world.”
De Gea’s Manchester United contract is due to expire in the summer of 2020, after the club triggered a one-year contract extension back in November.
