Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided fitness updates on Luke Shaw and Axel Tuanzebe ahead of Manchester United’s friendly with Aston Villa this weekend.
United have been given an extra week to prepare for the new Premier League season following their European exploits and will play Aston Villa in a pre-season encounter at Villa Park on Saturday, where Solskjaer will have just one opportunity to fine-tune his side ahead of the season opener against Crystal Palace next week.
The Norwegian has been discussing his plans and provided an update on the fitness of defensive duo Shaw and Tuanzebe, confirming that the former will feature tomorrow as he continues his recovery from an ankle problem.
The trip will come too soon for Tuanzebe who has endured a nightmare run with injuries of late, Solskjaer confirming the academy graduate is still a few weeks away from a first-team return.
“For me, Luke is looking really good in training. He has come back, looking strong, and will play in the friendly against Villa,” Solskjaer told the official Man Utd website.
“Then Axel is getting closer as well. In a few weeks’ time, I guess he will be with us training full-time and hopefully we’ll be able to give him games quickly.”
Solskjaer has confirmed he will use the clash against Villa as an opportunity to get minutes into his squad, the club’s preparations for the season affected by the unprecedented quick turnaround and last week’s international break.
“It’s going to be a game to give players minutes,” Solskjaer added.
“Some have trained more than others and some will be more ready than others. Some played international games, which actually sometimes you think you don’t really want that but some of them have got valuable minutes there.
“We’ll give the others minutes against Villa so they can all start on a decent level because it’s going to be a long season.”
United have been handed a boost after midfielder Paul Pogba returned to training following a positive test for Covid-19, with the 27-year-old withdrawn from the France squad for their Nations League wins over Sweden and Croatia.
Mason Greenwood, however, is training away from the main group after being sent home international duty, the youngster and Manchester City’s Phil Foden removed from the England squad after breaking coronavirus protocols during the Three Lions’ trip to Iceland.
