Solskjaer admits it 'hurts' seeing Liverpool win the title

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits it ‘hurts’ seeing Liverpool win the Premier League title but congratulated Jurgen Klopp and his players after the club were crowned champions.

Liverpool were crowned as champions of English football for the first time in three decades following Manchester City’s defeat to Chelsea on Thursday night, the Merseyside club securing the title with a record seven games of the season remaining.

The club’s long-awaited title triumph also means they have now moved within one of United’s record of 20 top flight crowns, and Solskjaer has now called on his side to improve next season as they bid end a run of seven years without Premier League success.

“Any team that wins the Premier League deserves it. It is a hard league to win. Credit to Jurgen Klopp and his players,” Solskjaer told his press conference on Friday.

“But every time you see anyone else lift a trophy, it hurts. That’s the feeling everyone associated with Man Utd. We want to get back to winning ways. That is our challenge.”

Solskjaer was a key player during Manchester United‘s dominant, trophy-laden spell under Sir Alex Ferguson, who guided the club to an unprecedented 13 league titles, and the Norwegian is keen to bridge the gap to their rivals as quickly as possible.

“The run of titles under Sir Alex Ferguson will not be easy for anyone to copy, he was a master of staying at the top. Our challenge is to make sure it is not 26 years or more before we win it.

“We will do everything we can to shorten the distance or go past them.”

United will be seeking to end the season with major silverware success and remain in contention for both the Europa League and FA Cup, Solskjaer’s side travelling to face Norwich in the quarter-finals of the latter competition tomorrow evening.
