Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Harrison Bettoni, the highly rated Wigan Athletic teenager.
The 18-year-old attacking midfielder arrives on a free transfer, with the Blues paying training compensation to the League One club. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement with his customary “here we go”.
The contract is a lengthy one. Bettoni has committed to a deal running until June 2030, tying him to Stamford Bridge for four years. His arrival continues a familiar pattern of recruitment under the club’s ownership.

Chelsea saw off notable competition to land him. Football Insider reported that Manchester City and AC Milan both held talks with Bettoni’s camp, only for the Blues to win the race. He was out of contract at the Brick Community Stadium this summer.

His breakthrough season made the interest inevitable. Bettoni marked his League One debut in remarkable fashion, coming off the bench against AFC Wimbledon to curl in a free-kick equaliser before grabbing a late winner. It was a debut few will forget.
He built on that impressively. The Manchester-born teenager finished the campaign with four goals in 27 appearances across all competitions, having risen through Wigan’s academy since joining as an under-13.
Standing at 6ft 3in, his physical profile stands out. Bettoni combines that frame with genuine technical quality and is regarded within English youth football as one of the country’s brightest prospects.
He is unlikely to feature for the first team immediately, though. Bettoni will instead develop within Chelsea’s structure, following a model that has seen the club stockpile emerging talent in recent windows.
The signing came on a busy day at Stamford Bridge, with new head coach Xabi Alonso holding his first press conference and confirming that Alejandro Garnacho is available for transfer.
