Arne Slot has said Liverpool need to improve at both ends of the pitch after a ‘damaging’ draw with Tottenham at Anfield.
Liverpool conceded a last-minute equaliser to drop points in the race for Champions League qualification. The Reds had led through Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick, but failed to extend that lead and were punished late on. Spurs struck in the final moments to earn a point, as Richarlison steered in an equaliser.
The draw saw Liverpool climb into fifth, though was greeted with audible unhappiness from the home crowd at full-time.
After last season’s title win, Liverpool are now in a fierce battle for the Champions League places and failed to capitalise on defeats for Aston Villa and Chelsea.
Asked about the setback for his team, Slot said at his post-match press conference that Liverpool need to improve in both penalty boxes.
“Of course it’s damaging, but it’s how many times this has been damaging for us. We don’t help ourselves at all.
“It’s so many times this season that we’ve created much more xG or chances than the amount of goals we score. Usually in the Premier League you see a lot of teams outperforming their xG, but that definitely is [not] what we are doing throughout the whole season.
“Then a game still stays tight until the end and we struggle to keep clean sheets. We haven’t had as many clean sheets as you would want if you want to go higher up in the table. That’s a bad combination for picking up the amount of points we want to pick up.”
