Alan Shearer believes Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez sounds ‘disappointed and very down’ after Wednesday night’s 2-0 home defeat to Manchester United.
Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford earned three points for the visitors, a result which leaves Newcastle having won just one of their previous eight league fixtures.
Benitez has stated he believes it would be a ‘miracle’ should his side avoid relegation this season, with owner Mike Ashley having refused to significantly invest in the first-team as he seeks to sell the club.
Former Newcastle captain Shearer, the club’s all-time record goalscorer, believes the Spaniard is beginning to show signs of frustration with the nature of the job at St James’ Park.
‘Rafael Benitez sounds disappointed and very down.’ Shearer told BBC 5 Live.
‘I understand his reluctance to talk about January transfers as he’s probably not going to get anything out of it.’
‘Newcastle could be in a relegation battle come the end of the season and if they can finish fourth from bottom, I’ll be delighted with that.’
