Sancho names Manchester United and England legend as a childhood idol

Manchester United transfer target Jadon Sancho has opened up on his footballing idols and has named Wayne Rooney as the player he most looked up to as a youngster.

The Borussia Dortmund winger has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer having emerged as the club’s number one transfer target, with the England international having enjoyed another stand-out season in the Bundesliga scoring 14 goals and providing a further 15 assists.

Sancho’s likeliest destination should he leave Dortmund is believed to be a big-money move to Manchester United, and the 20-year-old has now teased the Red Devils’ supporters by naming the club’s all-time record goalscorer Rooney as his childhood idol.

“Who did I look up to when I was young? I’d probably say Rooney,” he said via England’s twitter account.

“It’d have to be Rooney because he was doing madness at Man United, even at Everton when he made his debut.

“He was too grown for everyone, at his age.”
