Andy Robertson has lavished praise on Jordan Henderson and believes the Liverpool captain is the ‘leading candidate’ to be named as the Premier League’s player of the year.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have enjoyed a record-breaking start to the season and are on course to win their first top flight title in three decades, Liverpool needing just six more wins to secure the title ahead of this weekend’s trip to face Norwich at Carrow Road.
Key to their success and unbeaten campaign thus far has been the form of club captain Henderson, the midfielder currently playing the best football of his career and producing several moments of inspiration and leadership for the league leaders.
The England international’s stellar showings have seen him move in as the favourite to be crowned as the Premier League‘s finest player, and Robertson believes the recognition would be a just reward for the 29-year-old who has elevated his game to new levels this season.
“For me, I think he’s the leading candidate [for player of the year],” Robertson told Sky Sports News.
“At times this season when we’ve struggled Hendo has been the one that has driven us forward.
“He’s the one who has made sure we don’t get slack, or he has chipped in with some really important goals or really important assists.
“Maybe his performances at the start of the season went a little bit under the radar, but as the season has progressed he’s not really had a bad game.
“You really appreciate him when you train with him every day and in this country he’s not been appreciated enough in his character.
“He’s getting the recognition he deserves because he is a fantastic player, a fantastic role model and a fantastic captain. He’s driven us to three points at times this season when we’ve struggled.”
