Report: Messi broke down in tears in dressing room after Anfield defeat

Lionel Messi broke down in tears after Barcelona’s Champions League dream ended at the hands of Liverpool.

Liverpool shocked the footballing world with a stunning semi-final comeback win against the Spanish champions, overturning a 3-0 first leg deficit with an epic 4-0 win at Anfield to progress to the final for the second successive season.

Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum each scored twice for Liverpool, sealing an incredible comeback which is being described as ‘Anfield’s greatest night’.

According to The Guardian Argentine superstar Messi was left inconsolable by the defeat, with the 31-year-old’s hopes of winning a fifth Champions League title shattered by Jurgen Klopp’s side.

It is the second consecutive season that Barcelona have been on the receiving end of a memorable comeback after collapsing to Italian side Roma in the quarter-finals last season. Having won the first leg 4-1 at home, the Spaniard’s were eliminated on away goals following a 3-0 reverse in Rome.

Messi was in tears in the Anfield changing rooms, missing the club’s coach back to John Lennon airport due to drug testing.

The Spanish media have also reported that Messi was involved in an angry confrontation with Barcelona supporters, furious at their side’s latest European capitulation.
