Gillsespie: Rangers signing Davies will be ‘the best player in the league’

Keith Gillespie has made the fairly bold prediction that imminent Rangers signing Steven Davies will be the best player in the Scottish Premiership.

While nothing has yet been confirmed, it has been reported that Davies has already completed his move from Southampton to Rangers, rejoining the club that he left back in 2012.

Since his departure from Ibrox, he has established himself as a regular in the Premier League, playing 193 games in the English top flight, scoring 12 goals from the heart of the Saints’ midfield.

However, after dropping down the pecking order at St.Mary’s, it looks as though the Northern Ireland international is heading back North of the border to bolster Steven Gerrard’s midfield.

Despite Davies now being 34, former Manchester United and Newcastle winger Keith Gillespie thinks he will have a big role to play in the Scottish Premiership and has named him alongside some of the best Northern Irish players ever.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Gillespie said: “You mention names like George Best, Pat Jennings and people like that. Steven Davis has got to be up there.

“If he comes to Rangers, he’d be the best player in the league. He is sensational. He knows how to get on the ball and how to dictate games – that’s what makes him such a good player.”

Rangers are currently level on points with Old Firm rivals Celtic at the top of the table, although they have played a game more.
