Steven Gerrard has said he was left ‘bitterly disappointed’ after Alfredo Morelos was sent off in Rangers’ 4-0 win over Ayr United in the Scottish League Cup quarter-final.

Morelos scored his eighth goal of the season before seeing red for two bookable offences as Rangers booked their place in the semi-finals, but manager Steven Gerrard doesn’t believe that the striker’s first yellow card was justified.

“He was very unlucky to get the yellow card because it was a clear foul on him,” Gerrard told Rangers TV.

“Their player should have got the yellow if anyone.”

The red card means that Morelos will miss their semi-final date with Aberdeen next month through suspension, and leaving Gerrard without his two first-choice strikers, as Kyle Lafferty is cup-tied having already represented Hearts this season:

“In different circumstances, I would have rested [Morelos], but he wants to play,” the former Liverpool midfielder added. “I’m not sure what’s been said [by Morelos to Madden] but I’m bitterly disappointed he won’t be available.

“It’s a frustration. We lose a player in form and we’re going to have to find a way to get the job done without a natural nine unless Sadiq comes to the party and improves an awful lot between now and then.”
