Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis has said he is delighted to sign veteran midfielder and “winner” John Obi Mikel, on a short-term deal this month.
The 31-year-old former Chelsea player was available on a free, after leaving Chinese Super League club Tainjin TEDA. Pulis is hopeful that his experience can be a big boost to the promotion chasing Championship side.
“He’s a winner,” Pulis told the press ahead of his sides FA Cup clash with Newport County this weekend.
“He’s had that experience and Chelsea won almost everything with him as part of the team.
“A good player, and a winner, and hopefully that rubs off on everyone around the football club.
“There were lots of other clubs interested. We spent a bit of time on it and we’ve convinced him it will be a good challenge for him.
“Him coming through the door and into training yesterday gave everyone a massive lift. Hopefully we can get one or two more of that ilk.”
Mikel played 374 times in all competitions for Chelsea, during a 10 year spell in West London. The Nigeria international won two Premier League titles and the Champions League during time at the Stamford Bridge club.
He joins Boro with the club sat fifth in the table with 47 points from 28 games and aiming for a return to the top flight after their relegation in 2017.
