Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly taken the lead in the race to sign Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt.
The Dutch defender has emerged as one of Europe’s most in-demand players after a superb season, captaining Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals and a domestic double.
According to highly respected Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio however, French champions PSG have now moved ahead of the competition as the favourites to sign De Ligt.
The Parisian club are looking to breathe new life into their project this summer as they bid to conquer Europe after years of domestic dominance, with a move for one of world football’s most promising young talents in their sights.
De Ligt’s agent, Mino Raiola, is believed to be in Paris this week to continue talks with the club which are believed to be at an advanced stage and a deal could be concluded following Leonardo’s return to PSG as sporting director this week.
Asked by Mundo Deportivo this week if he would be keen to play with Lionel Messi and Frenkie de Jong at Barcelona next season, De Ligt suggested that a move to the Nou Cam may not be ‘best’ for his career.
“Of course it would be nice, but I must also look at what is best for me,” he said.
“For me, the most important thing is to know that in the team where I go I can have prominence and play many games.”
