Pro Ref has issued an apology for an ‘error of judgement’ that allowed Erling Haaland’s Manchester Derby winner to stand.
Professional Game Referees (Pro Ref) is the body that oversees all Premier League, English Football League (EFL), WSL Football and Football Association (FA) competitions, and the association has now admitted a major mistake from Sunday’s game.
Haaland’s controversial winner was awarded by VAR, despite Enzo Fernandez appearing to interfere from an offside position. The Argentina international attempted to make contact with Josko Gvardiol’s deflected cross, ahead of Man United defender Lisandro Martinez, before the ball reached Haaland.
The goal was initially flagged offside, though VAR overturned that decision. Haaland’s effort was the only goal of the game as Manchester City claimed a 1-0 win at Manchester United to maintain their perfect start to the season.
Pro Ref has now issued an apology for the ‘error of judgement’ and have said an internal ‘review’ will take place.
“Following the incident in the 60th minute of Sunday’s Premier League fixture between Manchester United and Manchester City at Old Trafford, we can provide clarification regarding Erling Haaland’s awarded goal,” a Pro Ref spokesperson said.
“The on-field decision was offside against Erling Haaland — that was checked by VAR and he was found to be in an onside position.
“In the same attack, it was established that Enzo Fernández did not play the ball and therefore that makes any offside offence subjective, however, on this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review.
“Contact has been made with Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we deem is an error of judgement. A review of the incident will take place.”
