The closer you are to goal, the more likely you are to score, right?
Well that’s certainly been the case for these penalty box predators, as we look at the English top flight’s most prolific poachers from in and around the goal.
Eleven weeks into the new Premier League season and we’ve decided to delve into some of the best stats of the campaign, here are the five teams with the most goals inside the box so far:
Arsenal – 14 goals
It has been somewhat of a turbulent season for Arsenal so far, with fan unrest seemingly building and the pressure beginning to mount on under-fire manager Unai Emery.
The club are now six points adrift of the Premier League’s top four having failed to win in any of their previous three league fixtures, and a lack of goals could be behind their struggles so far.
The Gunners have scored 16 times in their first 11 games of the new campaign, with a huge proportion – 14 – of those goals coming from inside the penalty area.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leads the way with eight league goals so far, and last season’s Golden Boot winner is the only Arsenal player to have scored from outside of the box so far.
Liverpool – 21 goals
The league leaders have enjoyed an impressive start to the new season, winning 10 of their first 11 fixtures to open up a six-point advantage at the top of the division.
Unsurprisingly Jurgen Klopp’s side rank highly amongst goals scored in the Premier League, while they are also equal third for the most goals scored from inside the penalty area.
Of the 25 goals so far scored by Liverpool, 21 have come from inside the 18-yard box, with Sadio Mane their leading scorer in the league with six Premier League goals – all of which have come inside the penalty area.
Chelsea – 21 goals
Frank Lampard’s exciting young Chelsea side have been an entertaining watch in the opening weeks of the new season, playing a fluid style which has so far delivered impressive results as they have made their way into the division’s top four.
Tammy Abraham has been key to the success of the new-look Chelsea side and has scored nine league goals so far, eight of which have come in the penalty area with only Leicester’s Jamie Vardy more deadly from inside the box.
Of Chelsea’s 25 league goals this campaign, 21 have come from inside the box, an identical record to league leaders Liverpool.
Leicester – 23 goals
It’s been some start to the season for Brendan Rodgers and Leicester City, who currently sit third in the Premier League and harbour realistic ambitions of securing a top four finish this season.
The second highest scorers in the division on 29 goals, a massive 23 of which have come from inside the penalty area with Jamie Vardy leading the way on nine penalty box finishes.
The 32-year-old is arguably in the best form of his career and currently leads the race for the Golden Boot. He is likely to increase both his and Leicester’s total of goals from inside the box in the coming months.
Manchester City – 30 goals
The Premier League champions are comfortably the highest scoring side so far this season, having plundered 34 goals in just 11 fixtures. Whilst Pep Guardiola’s side continue to score at a prolific rate, the vast majority of their goals come from inside the area.
A huge 30 of Manchester City‘s 34 goals have been scored within this range, comfortably the most in the Premier League.
Raheem Sterling has been their most efficient penalty box poacher, with all seven of the winger’s goals coming from inside the penalty area, a demonstration of the 24-year-old’s attacking development under Guardiola’s tutelage.
