Postecoglou encourages Spurs supporters to ‘get excited’ after Aston Villa win

Ange Postecoglou has encouraged the Spurs supporters to ‘get excited’ after his side’s 4-0 win at Aston Villa.

The north Londoners secured an emphatic win at their top-four rivals to close the gap on the Champions League places.

James Maddison opened the scoring after connecting with Pape Matar Sarr’s cross on 50 minutes, before Brennan Johnson slammed in a second moments later as Spurs took control of the contest.

John McGinn’s wild swipe at Destiny Udogie earned the Aston Villa captain a straight red card as the home side’s frustrations built and Spurs exploited the increased space with third and fourth goals in stoppage time.

First, Son Heung-min scored his 159th goal for Spurs to move equal fifth among the club’s all-time record scorers, before the South Korean turned provider for substitute Timo Werner to net a fourth.

Victory moves Spurs within two points of their beaten opponents, with a game in hand, and Postecoglou has said the supporters should get excited after a ruthless performance from his team.

“I think we made it tough for Aston Villa, they worked hard just to contain us. Last 10 minutes of the second half you could already see them starting to tire a little bit,” Postecoglou said to Sky Sports.

“We just had to continue to do that and we got our rewards in the second half.

“We knew it was a big game obviously, everyone was talking it up as a game where it could lead to something significant. I never saw it like that, there’s a good chunk of the season still to go.

“We just needed to stay calm, play our football.

“Get excited, why not? The supporters, if they don’t get excited by a performance and result like that, in what was a significant game…you’ve got to enjoy that.

“We know every game is a challenge in the Premier League, especially a team like us who are trying to gain an identity.

“The next step for us is to maintain a consistency of quality performances.”
