Portugal v Holland – Nations League final preview and predictions

The inaugural Nations League will reach its conclusion on Sunday, when hosts Portugal face the Netherlands for the chance to be crowned champions.

Here’s all you need to know about this weekend’s final in Porto…

A run of four consecutive draws was ended with the host’s 3-1 semi-final win over Switzerland, with Cristiano Ronaldo hitting a hat-trick to earn Portugal’s place in Sunday’s final.

Portugal’s qualification campaign for the 2020 European Championships has begun in disappointing style, Fernando Santos’ side labouring to home stalemates with Ukraine and Serbia.

Ronaldo was making his first appearance in the newly-formed competition in the semi-finals, having been rested for recent national team fixtures as his own request.

The 34-year-old remains one of the world’s finest players and will surely be motivated to make a difference in the final after suffering injury during Portugal’s Euro 2016 success.

After a dark period for the Dutch which has seen them miss out on the last two major tournaments, Ronald Koeman’s young side are beginning to show signs of potential.

The Netherlands topped a Nations League group including arch-rivals Germany and World Cup winners France to reach the finals, before dispatching England 3-1 after extra-time in the last four.

Their European Championships campaign began with a 4-0 thrashing of Belarus before a late defeat to the Germans, though they will remain confident of securing qualification.

Young stars such as Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt indicate a bright future for the Oranje, who are led by Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.
