Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly keen on signing wantaway Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and is set to build his new Paris Saint-Germain side around the Frenchman.
Pochettino is finally back in management following his Tottenham Hotspur sacking back in November 2019 and has been deemed the man to succeed the recently departed Thomas Tuchel at the Parc des Princes.
The former Argentina international built an entertaining and youthful side at Spurs and guided the club to the Champions League final in 2019, where they were ultimately defeated by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
At Spurs, Pochettino was praised for regularly taking his side into the top four despite working with limited finds, yet at PSG the 48-year-old will face an entirely different prospect, with a team full of superstars and the likelihood of cash available to make high profile additions.
As per the Daily Star, Pochettino has already set his sights on a potential signing, with Manchester United’s Paul Pogba seemingly the man he is after.
The World Cup winner is out contract next summer and is unlikely to sign a new deal, with United accepting that the player wishes to leave the club, despite a recent upturn in form.
While agreeing a deal appears increasingly unlikely in the current window, the Red Devils will surely be keen to offload their record signing in the summer, in order to prevent him moving on for free in June 2022.
Pogba had previously been rumoured to be signing a new long-term contract at Old Trafford over the summer following an impressive end to last season, while the financial impact of the ongoing pandemic forced any interested parties to shelve any plans of making a move for the French international.
However, any hopes of tieing the 27-year-old down to a new deal went out the window earlier this term, after the player’s agent Mino Raiola revealed that his client wishes to the leave club – a revelation that came just hours before United’s crucial Champions League encounter with RB Leipzig.
Despite that outburst by the controversial Italian, Pogba has continued to remain a key player for United, with his current impressive form helping Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side mount an unlikely title charge.
The former Juventus midfielder has been linked with a return to Turin in recent seasons after spending a successful four year spell with I Bianconeri between 2012 and 2016, while he’s been rumoured to be keen on linking up with compatriot Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid.
Those two historic clubs appeared the most likely destinations for Pogba in the past, yet this potential offer from Pochettino and PSG could be tempting, particularly with the new boss keen to build his side around the Frenchman.
The Ligue 1 side may also have the edge financially, with the club more than able to match the player’s hefty wage demands as well as a United’s significant asking price.
