Pochetinno plans on handing Lukaku Chelsea lifeline

Mauricio Pochettino is prepared to hand Romelu Lukaku a chance at Chelsea next season.

Pochettino is expected to be named as Chelsea’s next head coach ahead of next season having held positive talks with the club’s board over the role.

The Argentine will be tasked with turning the west London club’s expensively assembled squad into a winning team, following a disastrous season that leaves Chelsea 12th in the Premier League table.

Goals have been a major issue for Chelsea, with just four teams having scored less than the Blues in the Premier League. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pochettino is prepared to hand Lukaku a lifeline at Chelsea in a bid to solve the club’s lack of goals.

The Belgium international is on loan at Inter Milan after falling out of favour under former manager Thomas Tuchel. He endured a difficult start to the season on his return to Italy, but has found his form in recent weeks with four goals and four assists in his last eight appearances.

Lukaku is keen to remain in Milan, but will be offered the chance to relaunch his career at Chelsea with Pochettino set to pitch the club’s project to the 29-year-old. Chelsea signed Lukaku in a £95.5m deal and any sale would represent a significant loss on that investment.

Chelsea will instead look aid Lukaku in rediscovering his best form after a challenging period across the last two seasons. Despite the club’s record-breaking investment across the last two transfer windows, the west Londoners remain without a reliable option at centre-forward.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is set to leave at the end of the season, while David Datro Fofana and Armando Broja – recovering from a serious knee injury – remain unproven. Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig to add to their attacking options this summer.
