Players with the most Champions League titles as Modric and Carvajal make history

Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal made history at Wembley as the players with the most Champions League titles in the competition’s history.ย

The Spanish full-back broke the deadlock against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, while the Croatian midfielder made a late cameo as Real Madrid ran out 2-0 winners to win Europe’s biggest prize for the 15th time.

For England superstar Jude Bellingham it was his maiden Champions League triumph, but Modric and Carvajal have now won it six times in their respective careers and are the only players to have played a part in all six finals. Nacho Fernandez also has a sextet of winners medals, although he has only appeared in two finals.

They are part of a group of just five players that can claim such a feat, the first of whom to do so was Francisco ‘Paco’ Gento with Real Madrid in the fifties and sixties when the competition was still known as the European Cup. It took nearly sixty years for anyone to catch the Spaniard.

Toni Kroos got the fairytale send off his club career deserved as he also won the Champions League for a sixth time, five of which have come at Real while he was an unused sub for Bayern Munich’s win in 2013. He overtakes the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Casemiro, Gareth Bale, Isco and Marcelo, who are joined by Lucas Vazquez on five after Saturday night.

There are 11 players who have won it four times, including Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernandez, although neither played in the 2006 final for Barcelona. Andres Iniesta played a part in all four of the club’s wins. Gerard Pique didn’t appear in the final when he won it with Manchester United in 2008, but was victorious in three deciders after moving back to Barcelona.

Several Real alumni have four winner’s medals, including Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos. Mateo Kovacic won it three times with Madrid and once with Chelsea, although he only appeared in the 2021 decider. David Alaba has won two with Bayern and two with Real, although injury ruled him out of this year’s final.

Clarence Seedorf and Samuel Eto’o each hold a special place in Champions League history, winning the competition four times with three different clubs. The Dutch midfielder was successful with Ajax, Real Madrid and twice at AC Milan, while the Cameroonian striker won it twice at Barcelona, and once each with Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
