Ollie Watkins chasing Aston Villa record after Fulham brace

Ollie Watkins’ superb season continued as the forward scored both goals in Aston Villa’s 2-1 win at Fulham on Saturday.

Watkins scored a brilliant brace as Unai Emery’s side earned a hard-fought win in west London, a result which moved Villa above Spurs – who were beaten by Wolves – and into the Premier League’s top four.

Aston Villa are beginning to dream of Champions League nights at Villa Park and Watkins’ form has been a driving factor in their strong season, with the 28-year-old taking his total to 13 goals in the Premier League and 18 in all competitions so far this season.

Watkins has also provided a league-leading 10 assists, level with Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier, and is now closing in on an Aston Villa club record.

Only Dwight Yorke has ever been directly involved in more goals in a single Premier League campaign for Villa, after the former Trinidad and Tobago international recorded 27 goal involvements during the 1995/96 season.

Watkins’ current return of 23 goals and assists is the joint-second best return from an Aston Villa player in the Premier League era, alongside Christian Benteke in 2012/13 and Yorke’s 1996/97 season.

Most goal involvements in a single Premier League campaign for Aston Villa:

6. Ollie Watkins – 21 (2022/23)

5. Ashley Young – 22 (2007/08)
