Newcastle United host Aston Villa at St James’ Park on Saturday evening, on eight points from six league games and looking to bounce back from a 4-1 defeat at Coventry City.
Matthias Jaissle’s side have conceded 13 goals in the league, a joint division-high, and have gone 12 home league games without a clean sheet. They are unbeaten in five at St James’ Park (W3 D2), including a 2-1 win over Hull City. Villa won the last league meeting there 2-0 in January, before Newcastle won 3-1 at Villa Park in the FA Cup a month later.
Newcastle United team news
Anthony Elanga, Tino Livramento, Jacob Ramsey and Ewen Jaouen are out, with Jaissle saying Elanga and Ramsey could return to partial training next week. Bazoumana Touré, who was withdrawn late at Coventry City with a knee knock, is progressing well and Jaissle is hopeful he will join the group. Dan Burn is most likely too soon to start, Jaissle said, having only trained a couple of times since his return from injury.
Joelinton, who returned as a substitute at Coventry, could start and is expected alongside Nico Gonzalez and Joe Willock in midfield. Yoane Wissa and Mathias Fernandez-Pardo are at risk of losing their places, with William Osula pushing for a return up front after recovering from injury. Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy are expected to support him. Amar Dedic and Lewis Miley are competing at right-back, with Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman and Lewis Hall expected to continue, and Lukas Hornicek in goal.
Newcastle United predicted lineup
Newcastle United possible starting XI: Hornicek; Dedic, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Joelinton, Gonzalez, Willock; Murphy, Osula, Barnes
