Newcastle agree fee for Championship defender

Newcastle United have agreed a £5.5million fee with Blackburn Rovers over the transfer of Scottish international Grant Hanley.

The two clubs have been in negotiations over the transfer of the 24-year old for a number of weeks. They have finally agreed on a fee leaving Hanley free to make the journey northbound to complete a medical and finalise terms with the Magpies.

Newcastle are short on defensive cover at the moment after the departures of Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini.

Hanley will become Newcastle’s sixth summer signing as a Rafa Benitez prepares for life in the Championship.
