Neville picks apart Alonso’s schoolboy defending in Chelsea defeat

Gary Neville blasted Marcos Alonso’s schoolboy-esque defending during Chelsea’s dramatic 3-2 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium.

Chelsea‘s hopes of securing a top four finish were dealt a major blow with defeat to the struggling Hammers on Wednesday night, an entertaining derby encounter seeing the two sides exchange five goals in the capital.

Andriy Yarmolenko’s late winner snatched the three points for David Moyes’ side following a clinical counter-attack as Chelsea pushed forward for a winner of their own, and Neville criticised the lack of work-rate from full-back Alonso after the Spaniard failed to keep with the goalscorer.

“You see Yarmolenko is back there with Alonso,” Neville said in his commentary role with Sky Sports.

“Look at him, look at him, look at him. What are you doing Marcos Alonso? What are you doing? There’s his running back speed.

“It has cost Chelsea the game, along with a poor piece of defending from Rudiger.

“Marcos Alonso is level with him (Yarmolenko) at the point where that counter-attack starts and he doesn’t bother.

“I mentioned it earlier and that’s why he is under pressure at this football club. Frank Lampard will see that.

“Run back as fast as you can when your team lose the ball. You learn that aged six.”

Chelsea remain fourth in the Premier League but sit just two points clear of Manchester United and Wolves, the west London side returning to action this weekend with a clash against relegation-threatened Watford at Stamford Bridge.
