Gary Neville believes Manchester United potentially need just ‘one more signing’ in order to compete for the Premier League title.
Manchester United have made a positive restart to the Premier League campaign and are now unbeaten in 14 games in all competition either side of the season’s suspension, with the club seeking a top four finish and into the latter stages of both the FA Cup and Europa League.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been lifted by the impressive form of mid-season signing Bruno Fernandes, in addition to the returns from injury of both Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford.
Neville has been assessing his former side’s situation and believes the Red Devils are not far from being able to compete with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, insisting just one marquee addition could see the club challenge next term.
“I think one more signing,” Neville told Premier League Daily, as per the Mirror.
“You think about Liverpool signing [Virgil] Van Dijk and Alisson in goal.
“One or two more signings or [Paul] Pogba and one more signing playing to their absolute best. I think United can get closer.”
Neville believes that a new central defender should be a priority for Solskjaer ahead of the summer window, citing the example of Virgil van Dijk as evidence a leading defender can transform a side’s fortunes.”
Asked what position he would strengthen, Neville added: “Centre-back, you look at the impact Van Dijk had.
“Maguire has had a really strong impact but another real strong centre-back.
“They’ve still got to be defensively sound. One more signing and United can challenge.”
