David Moyes felt Everton were wronged after referee Andy Madley reversed his decision to award a late penalty against Manchester United.
The Toffees opened up a two-goal lead in the thanks to first-half finishes from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucouré, but they were pegged back by brilliant strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte in the second half.
A frenetic end to the contest resulted in Everton winning a spot kick after Ashley Young was seemingly fouled by Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire. However, Madley was sent to the monitor following a VAR check and subsequently cancelled his initial decision.
Moyes unhappy with VAR as Everton denied penalty vs Man Utd
After the final whistle Moyes argued that there wasn’t a clear and obvious error in awarding the penalty and therefore the call should have stood.
“I think the referee made the correct decision at the time and he should’ve stuck with it.
“I think everybody who probably watches football wants to see a referee who says ‘No, I’ll stick with what I’ve done’ … I just didn’t think what we saw was clear and obvious that he should’ve been sent to the screen.
“I don’t really know who you’d blame [for the decision]. I just don’t think VAR needed to get involved in it.”
Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim told TNT Sports that he thought the original penalty decision was a harsh one.
“It was a soft touch from what I saw,” the Portuguese sad. “I think it was a soft penalty, it was clear.”
The result means that Everton and United are still separated by only a point in the Premier League table.
