Mikel Merino has completed his medical tests ahead of finalising a transfer to Arsenal from Real Sociedad.

Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Merino from Sociedad after a lengthy pursuit, with the Gunners set to spend an initial €32m, with a further €5m in add-ons, to sign the Spain international.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Merino has now completed his medial with the North Londoners and is set to sign a contract until 2028 at the Emirates.

The 28-year-old formed part of the Spain squad that won Euro 2024 in the summer, where he scored the decisive extra-time winner in the quarter-final clash with Germany.

Merino, who had a short-lived spell at Newcastle United earlier in his career, has cemented a reputation as one of La Liga’s best midfielders in recent campaigns and was named in the 2022/23 divisional Team of the Season.

Last season, Merino led Europe’s top five leagues foe duels won (326), while only Chris Ramos (174) won more aerial duels than Merino (168) during the 2023/24 La Liga campaign.

The combative midfielder is viewed as the ideal complement to Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in Mikel Arteta’s engine room and will become Arsenal’s third major signing of the summer, following deals for David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori.
