Martinez: Lukaku is ‘free and happy’ after Manchester United exit

Roberto Martinez says Romelu Lukaku is ‘free and happy’ after leaving Manchester United this summer.

The Belgian international joined Inter Milan in a club-record £73 million deal in August, the 26-year-old having fallen out-of-favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford last season.

Lukaku, Belgium’s all-time record goalscorer, has now joined up with the national team and could return to the side for tonight’s Euro 2020 qualifier with Scotland, and manager Martinez admits his star forward has been refreshed by the switch to Italy.

“This is the first time I have seen him free and happy,” Martinez said in his pre-match press conference.

“Going back to many camps I have not seen Rom so focused, so happy, so refreshed by the new challenge.

“I think he is now ready to face one of the biggest footballing chapters in his career with the Inter Milan move.

“His life is football, he just lives to score goals and to be effective for the national team and at club level.”
