Manchester United travel to Stamford Bridge this lunchtime looking to end an eight-match winless run across all competitions.
Michael Carrick’s side are 16th in the Premier League and just a point above the relegation zone, having taken only seven points from their opening eight league matches, their worst start to a campaign since 1986-87. United have not won away from home all season and go into the match on the back of a 0-3 home defeat to Bournemouth. Sunday’s defeat was the third time in four seasons that Bournemouth have won away at Old Trafford, and many observers expected Carrick to lose his job as a result, though he has been given more time to turn results around.
Manchester United team news
Bruno Fernandes is set to return to the starting lineup after being dropped for the Bournemouth match, a decision Carrick insisted was “pure football” rather than disciplinary, following reports that the captain had criticised his manager’s tactics after the defeat to Como. The pair have since held clear-the-air talks, and Carrick says Fernandes remains “fully committed” to the club.
Kobbie Mainoo is back in training, though his involvement this weekend is uncertain, and Marcus Rashford’s availability also remains unclear. Luke Shaw, Benjamin Sesko, Manuel Ugarte and Patrick Dorgu are all still missing. No further fitness concerns have been reported elsewhere in Carrick’s squad. United are attempting to secure their first away win of the season at the seventh time of asking. Manchester United did complete a Premier League double over Chelsea last season, however, offering Carrick some historical encouragement ahead of this reverse fixture.
