Amorim to target a left-back as first Man United signing

Ruben Amorim wants to prioritise the signing of a new left-back as his first business as Manchester United manager.

Amorim will take charge of Manchester United for the first time at Ipswich Town this weekend, following his appointment from Sporting Lisbon. The 39-year-old succeeds Erik ten Hag after a poor start to the season at Old Trafford and focus has already shifted towards new additions.

Amorim has favoured a 3-4-2-1 formation during his time in Portuguese football and wants to bring in a new left-back to suit his system. Manchester United have been without a recognised left-back during the current campaign with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia struggling with injury problems across the last 18 months.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that United have a three-player shortlist to solve their left-back issues with plans being made ahead of the upcoming transfer windows.

It remains to be seen whether a deal is done in January, however, with a summer signing the likeliest scenario. United spent more than £200m in the summer and significant funds are not expected to be available to the new manager in the winter window.

What left-backs could Manchester United target?

Though the three-player shortlist has not been specified, rumours have circulated surrounding potential interest in Premier League options.

Milos Kerkez has caught the eye of top clubs in the Premier League at Bournemouth and was monitored in the summer, while Antonee Robinson’s consistency at Fulham is also appreciated.

The latter led the Premier League for interceptions in 2023/24 and this season ranks among the division’s leading players for crosses into the penalty area (2nd), tackles (6th) and interceptions (5th).

United have also been linked with Alphonso Davies, who is out of contract at Bayern Munich at the end of the campaign. However, Real Madrid appears the likeliest destination for the Canada international.
