Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ‘keen’ on signing Manchester United forward Anthony Martial, with the Red Devils said to be ‘eager’ to sell the player.
The 25-year-old is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford following a difficult campaign on a personal note last time out, the Frenchman netting just seven goals in all competitions, including just four in the Premier League.
That tally represents a real drop off from the 2019/20 season, in which the former Monaco man fired in a career-best 23 goals across all competitions, with 17 coming in league action.
Affected by suspension, injury and the form of Edinson Cavani last term, Martial has slipped down the pecking order at Manchester United, leading to suggestions that he could be moved on this summer, having originally joined the club on deadline day back in 2015.
According to the Star, United are said to be ‘eager’ to part ways with their number nine, with Tottenham reportedly ‘keen’ on the player.
The report suggests that the Red Devils recent capture of Borussia Dortmund and England star Jadon Sancho has only served to lessen Martial’s chances of game time, while the emergence of Mason Greenwood could also be a major obstacle to a starting berth.
The forward – who has netted 78 goals in 258 games for the club – is likely to be on the market for around £50m, a similar price to what the club originally paid to prize him from France six years ago.
As for Spurs, the north London club are seeking potential replacements to talisman Harry Kane, the Three Lions skipper rumoured to be keen on a switch to champions, Manchester City.
While reports that an agreement worth £160m has been agreed between the two clubs are well wide of the mark, City have already had a £100m offer turned down and could improve that further.
Should Kane depart, Spurs would be in need of a suitable replacement, with no other senior centre-forwards at the club after opting not to purchase Carlos Vinicius on a permanent deal following his loan spell last season.
The club have been linked with the signing of Gabriel Jesus – potentially as part of the deal for Kane – while Southampton contract rebel Danny Ings is also a name that has been mentioned.
While Martial is potentially an option that the club would explore, the player’s reported £250,000-a-week wage could be a possible issue in pursuing a deal.
