Manchester City and Manchester United are competing to sign Benfica teenager Joao Neves.
Neves formed part of the Benfica team that won the UEFA Youth League in 2021/22, before breaking into the senior side last season. The 19-year-old made 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring once, as Benfica won the Primeira Liga title under Roger Schmidt.
90min are reporting that a number of European clubs are tracking the midfielder, with Manchester City ‘leading the race’.
However, the Citizens could face competition from Manchester United for Neves, with the club’s cross-town neighbours having been impressed with the emerging midfielder during scouting trips to watch Benfica teammate Antonio Silva.
Silva also broke into the Benfica team last season and was named in the Primeira Liga Team of the Year. The 19-year-old centre-back has earned five caps for Portugal since his senior debut last year.
Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund have also sent scouts to watch Neves, who is contracted at the Estรกdio da Luz until 2028.
The Portuguese champions are under no pressure to sell, having brought in big fees from the sales of Enzo Fernandez and Darwin Nunez in recent transfer windows.
