Ilkay Gundogan is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with Barcelona, with the 32-year-old free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides. Bernardo Silva could also leave next summer, having agitated for an exit in recent transfer windows.

According to the Daily Mail, Maddison is viewed as a potential replacement having shone for the Foxes in recent campaigns.

He scored 18 goals in all competitions for Brendan Rodgers’ side last season and his form during the current campaign – in which he has provided 11 goal involvements in 14 league games – earned the 26-year-old a place in England’s World Cup squad.

Guardiola wants more goals from midfield and the club are also monitoring Jude Bellingham’s situation at Borussia Dortmund, ahead of his expected exit from the Bundesliga side.

Newcastle saw two offers turned down for Maddison last summer and City are not expected to be alone in their pursuit of the player, who will enter the final 12 months of his deal at the King Power Stadium this summer.

He has shown no desire to sign a new deal at Leicester and is valued at around £60m. His sale could provide Rodgers with funds to rebuild the side next summer, after a disappointing Premier League campaign to date.
