Varane has since endured a challenging debut campaign with fitness issues and the concerning form of Harry Maguire means centre-back additions are again a focus, opening up the prospect of renewed interest in Torres.

The 25-year-old remained with Villarreal last summer despite transfer interest, having helped the Spanish side to Europa League success in 2020/21.

The centre-back has shone during the club’s run to the Champions League semi-finals this season, though the Manchester Evening News are reporting that Torres will consider offers to leave his boyhood side this summer.

Torres’ current contract is believed to contain a release clause of around €60m and Villarreal will demand a cash only deal for the defender, having contemplated player-plus-cash offers last summer.

Torres has earned 17 caps for Spain and formed part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020 last summer, before winning a silver medal with the national side at the Tokyo Olympics.
