Jose Mourinho has confirmed that the injury suffered by Eric Bailly is serious, and could require surgery.

The defender has been out of action for over a month after picking up an ankle injury during the last international break.

“I don’t want to be so pessimistic. I want to leave it with a doctor.

“We are trying a conservative treatment. If the conservative treatment is not resulting, probably he will have a surgery procedure but let’s wait a little bit more.”

United have good options at centre back, with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof all getting game time in recent weeks, while Daley Blind and Axel Tuanzebe can also fill in if needed.

Despite the clear concern about Bailly, Mourinho says he happy with his defensive options, and reserved special praise for Chris Smalling.

“During the whole season, we’ve had problems with central defenders but because the number is four or five, we manage always to have [players available] and Chris Smalling is playing amazingly well for seven or eight matches in a row maybe, so we are fine.”
