Ighalo’s Man Utd future up in the air with striker expected in Shanghai and Newcastle interested

Odion Ighalo’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain with the forward expected to return to Shanghai Shenhua at the expiry of his loan deal next month.

The Nigerian international signed for the club during the January transfer window on a short-team deal until the end of the season, though the suspension of football amid the coronavirus crisis makes the remainder of the campaign uncertain at present with Ighalo’s deal set to expire on May 31.

Manchester United are believed to want to extend the forward’s deal to the end of the Premier League season should it be resumed, the 30-year-old having impressed by scoring four goals in just eight appearances for the Red Devils.

According to Sky Sports, however, Shanghai Shenhua will only allow Ighalo to remain at Old Trafford if it is on a permanent deal, with the club believed to value the player at around £20m.

The Chinese Super League season is scheduled to start in July and the club are believed to be unwilling to allow the forward to remain in England on a temporary deal, and United are now faced with making a decision on the long term future of the player.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side may also face competition for Ighalo’s signature from Newcastle, the club reportedly interested in signing the Nigerian should the proposed takeover of the club be completed this summer.
