Man City confirm key duo have tested positive for Coronavirus

Manchester City have confirmed that Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte have tested positive for coronavirus, with the key duo currently observing a period of self-isolation.

The pre-season preparations of Pep Guardiola’s side have suffered a blow with both players now following the government guidelines surrounding the virus, though Man City have confirmed that neither player is currently showing symptoms despite their positive tests.

“Manchester City FC can confirm that Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte have tested positive for Covid-19,” a statement from the club reads.

“Both players are currently observing a period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine. Neither is displaying symptoms of the virus.

“Everyone at the club wishes Riyad and Aymeric a speedy recovery ahead of their return to training and the new season.”

Both players have taken to social media to thank supporters for their well wishes, with the pair expected to isolate for 10 days as per the government guidelines following a positive test.

The new Premier League season is set to begin this weekend but the duo are not expected to miss Manchester City’s opening fixture, the club beginning their campaign against Wolves on September 21 after being given a delayed start due to their progress in last season’s Champions League.
