Maguire pleased with Man United’s ‘intensity’ during Newcastle win

Harry Maguire has expressed his delight at Manchester United’s ‘intensity’ after seeing his side come from a goal down to beat Newcastle 4-1 at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s side secured a comfortable victory over the Magpies on Boxing Day, though they were made to come back from an early deficit after falling behind to Matty Longstaff’s goal on the counter-attack.

Anthony Martial scored twice in addition to further goals from teenager Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford, as Manchester United bounced back from last weekend’s defeat at struggling Watford to move within four points of the Champions League places.

Maguire has praised his side for their reaction to falling behind, in what was a much-improved performance from a United side who have struggled to break down defensively-minded opposition sides so far this season.

“We were in control of the game but they hit us on the counter attack. We gave a sloppy goal away and we were too wide as a back four,” Maguire told Amazon.

“We will learn from it but we showed a great mentality to come back after a poor result last time. We scored four great goals. We know we can score goals. We have to make sure our mentality is right. We are young squad but we have been too inconsistent this season.

“Against Watford we were not good enough for our standard but the boys showed a great intensity today and we thoroughly deserved the three points. We have now got a big game in two days and our story so far has been a good performance and then a not so good one.”
