Harry Maguire has spoken of his delight and excitement at joining Manchester United as he officially became the most expensive defender in football history.
The England international ended 12 months of speculation surrounding his future by putting pen to paper on a six-year deal at Old Trafford, which includes the option for a seventh, with Manchester United shelling out £80 million for the defenders services.
United initially showed their interest in signing the man affectionately known as ‘Slabhead’ last summer, back when Jose Mourinho was in charge, but were unable to secure a deal with Leicester following Maguire’s impressive displays at the World Cup.
Since then, United enjoyed a wretched time defensively, conceding a record 54 Premier League goals last season, the highest of any side in the top half of the table aside from 10th placed West Ham.
Speaking upon his world-record arrival at Old Trafford, Maguire says he is excited for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ‘vision and plans’ for the team.
“I am delighted to have signed for this great club,” Maguire told manutd.com.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leicester and would like to thank everyone at the club, and the fans, for their fantastic support over the past two seasons. However, when Manchester United come knocking on your door, it is an incredible opportunity.
“From my conversations with the manager, I am excited about the vision and plans he has for the team. It’s clear to see that Ole is building a team to win trophies. I am now looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting the season started.”
Maguire could make his debut in this weekend’s league opener against Chelsea.
