Liverpool vs Brentford – Premier League Match Preview

Premier League football is back at Anfield as Liverpool host Brentford, with both teams searching for consecutive victories.

It’s the first competitive game at Anfield without Jurgen Klopp in the dugout since 2015 and new boss Arne Slot will be hoping he can emulate the success of his predecessor, particularly on home soil.

Under the stewardship of Klopp, Liverpool went on the second-longest unbeaten home run
in Premier League history with 68 games. Only Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea went on a longer
run (86 games).

Form

Liverpool: W

Liverpool put a stop to Ipswich Town’s promotion party last Saturday lunchtime, as Diogo Jota and the inevitable Mohamed Salah netted to see off the Tractor Boys.

The first half was rather underwhelming from a Liverpool perspective. After an enthralling
pre-season, Slot’s side didn’t look convincing.

Liverpool improved after the break and opened the scoring through Diogo Jota. The Portugal international tapped in just before the hour after a fine team move, before Salah’s strike set a new record for the most opening day goals by a single player. It was the Egyptian’s ninth goal on Matchweek One, surpassing Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer (8).

Brentford: W

Brentford beat London rivals Crystal Palace 2-1 to remain unbeaten on every opening day since promotion to the Premier League.

Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbuemo continued their deadly double-act with the goals for the Bees, as the pair scored either side of an unfortunate Ethan Pinnock own goal.

Ivan Toney was absent from Brentford’s squad last weekend as he explores his options regarding a transfer, with interest from the Saudi Pro League.

Brentford have only won once at Anfield in their history, in a First Division game back in 1937. Thomas Frank is aiming to mastermind a first away win at Liverpool for the Bees in 87 years.

Last Meeting: Brentford 1-4 Liverpool, Premier League, 17th February 2024

The Merseyside club comfortably beat Brentford in the last meeting between the teams, with goals from Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo enough for a routine victory.

Nunez’s audacious chip commenced the scoring spree and Mac Aliister poked in Liverpool’s second within a minute of the restart.

Substitute Salah breezed past Brentford’s backline to net Liverpool’s third before Gakpo
rounded off the rout with an emphatic finish past fellow countryman Mark Flekken. Ivan Toney was the scorer of Brentford’s solitary goal.
