Liverpool welcome Bayer Leverkusen to Anfield on matchday four of the Champions League this week.
A familiar face will be in the opposition dugout as Xabi Alonso brings the Bundesliga champions to his former side. The Spaniard made 210 appearances for Liverpool as a player and won this competition with the Reds in 2005.
Alonso has emerged as one of Europe’s best up-and-coming coaches at the BayArena, having led Leverkusen to a maiden Bundesliga title in 2023/24 as part of a German double. Die Schwarzroten completed that double without losing a game.
The trip to Liverpool will be a tough examination of Leverkusen’s credentials in the Champions League. Arne Slot’s side are of of just two sides with maximum points after three group games, alongside Aston Villa.
