Liverpool target Brighton midfielder Bissouma as Wijnaldum replacement

Liverpool are looking at Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma as a potential replacement for Gini Wijnaldum, the Dutchman currently in the final year of his contract.

The 30-year-old has developed into one of the Reds most important players in recent years, with him playing a central role in their long-awaited Premier League successes last term, as well as netting two vitally important goals in the remarkable Champions League semi-final win over Barcelona back in 2018/19, with Jurgen Klopp’s side going on to defeat Tottenham in the final.

The midfielder first came to wider attention following some impressive performances during his solitary season at fellow Premier League side Newcastle United, before going on to sign for the Reds following the Magpies subsequent relegation at the end of the 2015/16 campaign.

While he’s had a hugely successful four-and-a-half-year stay at Anfield, it could well be coming to end for the former PSV Eindhoven man, with him still yet to agree to a new deal at the club despite his current contract being set to expire next summer.

With Klopp and co perhaps set to lose one of their key assets, it looks as if they could have a potential replacement in mind, with ESPN reporting that Seagulls midfielder Bissouma could be the man to step into Wijnaldum’s shoes.

The report outlines that the Mali international would fit the profile of the type of player that the club are interested in, with his age, 24, and relatively inexpensive transfer fee an attractive proposition for the current champions.

Bissouma has taken his game to a new level this season after a slow start to life at the Amex following his arrival from Lille back in 2018 and could well be ready to make the step up to a ‘big six’ side.

Graham Potter’s side are reportedly preparing themselves for offers for the midfielder in the January transfer window, although they would likely hope to retain his services until the summer – a similar situation to that of impressive young defender Ben White who has also been linked with an exit from the club.
