Liverpool reach agreement with Lyon over Shaqiri sale

Liverpool have reached an agreement with Lyon over the sale of Xherdan Shaqiri, with the winger set to sign for the Ligue 1 side in a £9.5m deal.

Shaqiri has been linked with an exit from Liverpool throughout the summer with the 29-year-old keen to secure regular first-team football, having made just seven league starts across the past two Premier League seasons.

Lyon have confirmed the deal subject to the completion of a medical, with Shaqiri set to leave Liverpool having won the Champions League and Premier League during his three seasons at Anfield, scoring eight goals in 63 appearances across all competitions.

Injuries blighted his time on Merseyside following a £13m arrival from Stoke in 2018, but the winger enjoyed some fine moments including a double off the bench against Manchester United in December 2018.

Liverpool appear unlikely to sign a direct replacement for the Switzerland international, with Jurgen Klopp set to focus on the introduction of Harvey Elliott into the first team after the teenager was handed his first Premier League start against Burnley on Saturday.

Divock Origi could also follow Shaqiri out of the exit door before the closure of the transfer window next week, with the Belgian forward understood to be interesting the likes of West Ham and Crystal Palace.
