Jurgen Klopp’s team failed with moves to sign defensive midfielders Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia in the summer, with the addition of a holding player understood to remain on the club’s agenda despite the signing of Wataru Endo.

The latter has grown in influence after a slow start at Liverpool, but will depart to compete in the Asian Cup with Japan this week.

Despite Endo’s impending absence and age (30), Palhinha is not being pursued during the current window, according to journalist Ben Jacobs. The latter was subject of interest from Bayern Munich in the summer after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s best ball-winners in West London.

Liverpool’s lack of defensive options has also seen Piero Hincapie linked with Anfield. The Ecuadorian has struggled for game time at Bayer Leverkusen this season, and his ability to operate at centre-back and full-back is appealing given the absence of Andy Robertson, Kostas Tsimikas and Joel Matip.

However, the Reds are not understood to be considering a move for the highly-rated 21-year-old at this time.
