Liverpool were beaten 4-2 by AC Milan in a disappointing pre-season performance in Hong Kong.

Arne Slot’s side endured a difficult evening at the Kai Tak Stadium, as Milan cut apart the Premier League champions on the counter-attack.

Rafael Leao opened the scoring for the Italian side inside 10 minutes, firing high past Alisson after Virgil van Dijk failed to adequately close down the Portuguese forward.

Liverpool levelled before half-time, courtesy of a brilliant Dominik Szoboszlai goal. The Hungarian picked out the far corner after finding space just inside the area. However, the menacing Leao again undid the Reds minutes after the restart.

A fine combination saw Leao burst away from Conor Bradley before teeing up Ruben Loftus-Cheek to score.

Milan made it three through Noah Okafor’s fine finish on 57 minutes, before Cody Gakpo pulled one back in stoppage time.

But Liverpool’s slack showing was summarised as Milan added a fourth moments later. A calamitous mix-up between Giorgi Mamardashvili and Kostas Tsimikas presented Okafor with an open net to seal the win.

Liverpool will hope to bounce back when the Reds take on Yokohama FM in Japan on Wednesday.
