Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has left the club’s pre-season tour of Asia due to an Achilles injury.

It continues an injury-impacted period for Gomez who missed much of last season’s run-in with a hamstring issue. The 28-year-old started just six league games last season and has now suffered another setback.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Arne Slot confirmed Gomez’s issue: “He was, of course, with us for the first part of the week, but he had some Achilles problems.

“We thought it was better to assess it back in England and for him to work on him to come back to the team, probably in more ideal circumstances for him than be part of the group that every time goes out.

“So, we decided to let him go back to England. But we hope and expect to have him back soon.”

The absence of Gomez leaves Liverpool light at centre-back. His absence and Jarell Quansah’s departure for Bayer Leverkusen leaves the Reds with just Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk as recognised centre-back options.

The Premier League champions have been linked with a move to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, who has 12 months remaining on his contract.
