Lampard unhappy with Chelsea’s Super Cup preparations

Frank Lampard has admitted he was unhappy with Chelsea’s UEFA Super Cup preparations after his side suffered a penalty shoot-out defeat to Liverpool in Istanbul.

Tammy Abraham missed the decisive penalty as Liverpool emerged victorious in Istanbul, the Premier League rivals unable to be separated after a 2-2 draw following extra-time.

Champions League winners Liverpool were afforded an extra two days recovery after beginning their Premier League campaign on Friday against Norwich, whilst Chelsea opened their season at Manchester United on Sunday.

Lampard admits the scheduling put his side at a disadvantage but insists he is proud of his side following their performance in the European showpiece.

“I don’t want to look like I’m moaning but it clearly affects preparation, it’s unfortunate they have two day extra recovery,” Lampard said in his post-match press conference.

“I respect Liverpool, but I felt we were the stronger team. I’m a terrible loser but the feeling for me is one of pride.

“If we keep playing like that then we’ll be okay. I saw a lot of things I want to see.”
