Lampard gives Pulisic and Thiago Silva fitness updates ahead of Brighton clash

Frank Lampard has provided fitness updates on Christian Pulisic and Thiago Silva ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Brighton on Monday night.

Chelsea open their Premier League campaign with a trip to face the Seagulls at the Amex Stadium, with the club in optimistic mood following a summer of significant investment, Lampard splashing more than £200m on a host of exciting new additions.

Lampard has now given an update on the fitness of his side ahead of what may prove a new-look XI, including Pulisic who suffered a hamstring injury during the club’s FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal last month.

The US international has returned to training with Lampard confirming the star is in contention to feature, as is club captain Cesar Azpilicueta who suffered his own hamstring complaint in the cup final defeat.

“Both trained since yesterday and both are in contention. They look to be over injuries and I just have to make sure I manage them carefully.” Lampard revealed at his pre-match presser.

Lampard also confirmed that the clash will come too early for summer signings Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell, the former expected to miss ‘a couple of weeks’ with a knock and Chilwell not yet at full fitness after joining from Leicester.

“Hakim Zayech got a knock in the friendly at Brighton and hopefully it will be a couple of weeks, we’ll have to see,” the former Blues midfielder added.

“Ben Chilwell is working towards fitness and he won’t be fit for Brighton. He has improved this week and is going in the right direction.

Thiago Silva is also unlikely to make his debut on Monday with the defender having not yet trained with the first-team, the former Paris Saint-Germain captain set to link up with his new teammates this weekend.

“Thiago Silva is now in London but not training with us until the weekend so I doubt very much if he’ll be involved at Brighton.”
